Today, Israel’s permit regime for Palestinians is one of the world’s most extreme and complex apparatuses for population management. Through interviews with Palestinian laborers and their families, conversations with Israeli clerks and officials, and research into the archives and correspondence of governmental organizations, Berda reconstructs the institutional framework of the labyrinthine permit regime, illuminating both its overarching principles and its administrative practices.
Dr. Yael Berda received her PhD from the Department of Sociology at Princeton University. Berda is an academy scholar at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies. Her current research is on the legacies of the British empire, focusing on bureaucracy, security and regime change. Before then, she practiced human rights law in Israel, focusing on administrative and constitutional law, specifically cases of freedom of speech, freedom of association, and freedom of movement. She has argued cases in the Israeli Supreme court, administrative courts and the military criminal courts.
Dr. Rema Hammami is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Birzeit University, Palestine. She has published numerous articles on Israel’s regime of spatial control specifically focusing on the everyday operations and experiences of checkpoints.
At this event, Professor Hammami will introduce Dr Berda and be in discussion with her about her book. There will be copies of the book to purchase. This is a joint event between the Educational Bookshop and the Kenyon Institute. All are welcome.
