A visitor can select from among a host specialized walks in Jerusalem, with each walk shedding light on the social, cultural, ethnic, or religious life of the city's population. Although the walks are intended to highlight the history and architecture of the city, they are also connected to religions, which cannot be separated from the human element.
The fortifications and military architecture may draw the attention of the visitor, who can trace them across the different eras, although attention is normally focused on the spiritual side. Jerusalem offers a number of different trails in the footsteps of Jesus Christ, his disciples and saints, or in the footsteps of Prophet Muhammad and his companions. It also provides a major potential for designing custom-designed trails based on personal interest: The Eastern Churches Trail, the Western Churches Trail, the Crusaders' Trail, the 10th Century Churches Trail, the Monasteries and Monasticism Trail, etc. In case interest is focused on Islamic structures, one could follow the Umayyad Structures Trail, the Ayyubid Structures Trail, the Mamluk Structures Trail, the Ottoman Structures Trail, the Religious Structures Trail, the Zawiyas and Sufi Trail, and the Social Institutions Trail.There are numerous other trails the visitor can follow, such as the Aquatic Structures Trail, the Ethnic Groups Trail, the Buildings' Rooftops Trail, the Roman Era Trail, and the Byzantine Era Trail. We will review ten trails in this brief; however, the reader might, based on the information presented here, design special trails.
